Employment in the Sacramento Region
(Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer counties) grew 2.6 percent
between 2004 and 2005, surpassing the national average job growth
of 1.6 percent. Nearly 30% of the region's population had an
Associate Degree or higher in 2003, a level of educational
attainment that exceeded the national average of 33.5 percent.
With five strategic planning sessions
completed since January 2006, and new FLC assistant professor Tony
DiCicco on board, FLC's administration of justice/criminal justice
adjunct faculty continues to work with faculty at Sacramento City
College to review curriculum. The planning sessions have focused
on program review, curriculum planning, student needs and
interest, area demographic labor market information, and marketing
strategies. The program is undergoing program review and FLC and
SCC faculty have pooled talent and resources to strengthen the
administration of justice/criminal justice curriculum offerings at
both institutions. The planning team is currently
revising/creating nearly 10 new courses, scheduled to debut in
fall 2007.
The FLC EARMARK grant advisory board
continues to develop FLC's career technical program planning, and
the recent advisory board featured a joint presentation by the
Sacramento County and El Dorado County Office of Education
Regional Occupational Program (ROP) faculty and administration.
The presentation allowed the entities the unique opportunity to
showcase their existing programs with public and private sector
executives, and discuss future trends and program opportunities.
The next meeting of the EARMARK advisory board is set for
September 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in FL1-008.

The heart of the FLC EARMARK grant project is
the FLC Community Response Team, or CRT. The CRT is a collection
of experienced faculty and staff is based on the nature of each
request, and serves as the first institutional review group for
all external suggestions and requests for FLC institutional
planning. At present, the college receives dozens of telephone and
email inquiries each week, and the CRT has been created to respond
quickly to the inquiries. The CRT membership is composed of
individuals with academic and business background, and a
particular expertise based on the subject of the external request.

For the first time, FLC administrators
recently completed the local application for federal funding
through the Vocational and Technical Education Act (VTEA). In
previous years, the FLC application was blended into the formal
application submitted by Cosumnes River College. The submission
represents another step in the institutional maturation of FLC!
Did you know that FLC's career technical dean
was also the NAIA national free-throw champion (this was when gym
shorts were very short!) and was a nightly news anchor for NBC
immediately following his collegiate career?
